Day 2: Genesis 2

The Second chapter of Genesis begins by completing the creation story by accounting for the event that was accomplished on the seventh-day. God rested and blessed the day and sanctified it; thus God created one last thing: the sabbath day. We can see here that the origin of God’s sabbath goes back beyond Sinai to creation.

Moreover, we see this chapter complementing the first chapter of Genesis by providing details that are not mentioned in the first chapter. For example, God did not only create trees but He also created the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Another important example that is worth mentioning  is that God created Adam before He created Eve. However, they were all created on the 6th day. That means after Adam was created, he was given the opportunity to name all animals, then he was put to sleep, and God created Eve. Adam did not request for a partner. God saw that it was not good for the man to be alone and therefore provided him a partner.

Even more fascinating is that both Adam and Eve were crafter with the hands of God, unlike any other thing that was created. However, what makes humans even more special is that God breathed into both the man and the woman and they became living souls. Therefore we have a piece of God in us; His breath. We were indeed created in His image.

Another important point that must be mentioned is the command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This command was given to Adam (Genesis 2:16,17) before God created Eve (Genesis 2:21-22).However, up to the end of this chapter, everything was perfect and man was in harmony with his creator.
